Hair care used to be a conundrum for me! I think most women feel the same way. We’re always looking for better options to improve our hair as well as making it grow and can easily be misled by the slew of products on the market.
I’ve visited my local Sally’s and Marshall’s store a plethora of times only to stock up on unnecessary products.
I’ve bought hair masks, conditioners, various shampoos and conditioners, scalp toners, hair oils, keratin products, products with no sulfates and parabens and those that included those harmful ingredients.
In the past my choice of purchase was based solely on cost, packaging and the most important scent!
Be sure to tell me if you’ve done this too in the comment section.
And the sad thing is I overlooked what’s actually in the product. After years of revolving door hair treatments I now stick to a few at home remedies that have aided the growth of my hair.
I don’t want to overwhelm you so today we’ll address the main change I made that aided my hair’s health.
Being stationed solely at home for all these months thanks to Covid has given me the opportunity to up my hair care routine.
This is the hair care routine I follow that has yielded satisfying results:
Amla Oil
This oil comes from the gooseberry fruit tree that can be found mainly in India and Asia, but also in the Caribbean and South America. I ate gooseberries when I was a child and unbeknownst to me it’s a game changer in hair care.
Amla oil is used to stimulate hair growth plus additional benefits include reduction of hair loss, improving scalp health, intercepting early greying of hair, preventing and treating dandruff and dry scalp.
Amla oil is made by soaking the dried fruits in coconut oil, castor oil or another type of oil, plus some products include Ayurvedic herbs for enhanced nutrition.
How To Use Amla Oil
- Use a pea size amount everyday in hair (which is what I’ve consistently done for years)
- Apply from scalp to the ends of your hair
- Apply liberally (about a table spoon) the night before you wash. I would also encourage you to limit the number of times you wash your hair in a week. The more you wash, the more you eliminate the benefits of oils in your hair and could potentially dry out your hair.
I’m pretty religious about its application since I’ve realized the long list of benefits to my hair.
Where To Buy
- Amla oil can be purchased at your local Indian store Or
- Amazon has several brands and reviews. It’s listed anywhere from $9-20. An organic brand is Tattva’s Herbs Amla Oil. It’s listed at $17.95 for an 8 oz bottle. This product is non-GMO, vegan, cruelty free and 100% organic. Another option is Bhringraj Scalp Therapy. $17.99 for 6.76 oz bottle. The ingredients are organic and the reviews seem to be good. This amla oil has a combination of oils and Ayurvedic herbs.
Side Effects and Takeaways
Understand that all women are different and we may respond differently to products. Amla oil isn’t usually associated with side effects and I’ve never had any. I would recommend you research any products that you’re considering as an option for your hair care routine.
The smell may take some getting use to in my opinion. However, applying a pea size amount will not take much of an acclimation.
These age old tips and tricks have strengthened many a hair and this can happen for you! Many years ago my hair was thinning at a fast rate and amla oil has been the main reason for my hair recovery. The picture above is one of my hair now. I’m looking forward to further improvements to my hair growth and hair health.
I’d love to hear about your hair care routine and any questions or comments about this topic.
