Summer is upon us and so many of us will be enjoying the parks, sights and beach. The outdoors are calling after being indoors for such an extended period of time during the past year of mandatory shut downs, stay indoors orders and safety protocols. It’s important that we protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun while returning to normal and enjoying summer to the fullest. Here are the top 5 reasons why we ALL need sunscreen:

1. Reduce the Risk of Sunburn and Sunspots

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve always thought that darker skin tones do not need sunscreen. The fact remains that this is an incorrect thought process. Anyone with any skin tone can be sunburnt.

I have personally seen lots of dark skin toned families and friends who have gotten sunburns, sunspots and other skin conditions that proceeded extended exposure to UVB rays.

The sun has become increasingly hazardous since the ozone layer continues to diminish. This barrier served to shield us from harmful UVB rays and now that this is depleting we must use sunscreen to protect our skin’s health.

2. Decrease the Risk of Cancer

Excessive exposure to the sun can lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. Using SPF daily even on cloudy or rainy days will help protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun that cause cancer. It’s recommended that we use SPF 30 or more for full coverage.

The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there will be over a hundred thousand cases of skin melanomas in 2021. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, the first being heart disease. One in every four deaths is caused by cancer.

3. Prevent Signs of Aging

Our skin will age naturally, it’s true, and when we throw in prolonged exposure to the sun,  our skin becomes vulnerable to fine lines, wrinkles, stubborn sunspots, skin discoloration and leathery skin. Our skin is the largest organ we possess and most susceptible to the elements. Use SPF daily to extend the longevity of your skin.

4. Protection From Heat Exhaustion

I’ve certainly experienced heat exhaustion and needless to say it has a dizzying, nauseous effect…literally! The Mayo Clinic details that it causes faintness, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headache and more. The simple but profound act of wearing sunscreen is one way to aid in preventing heat exhaustion.

5. Endless Options

One reason people tend not to wear sunscreen is because of the hassle of putting on an additional product. Let’s face it, our lives are overwhelmed with to dos as it is! There are simple solutions though…

Sunscreen has come a long way from being thick and chalky. There’s a plethora of options; water resistant, stick, mineral sunscreen to name a few. You can also buy lotions, skin care and makeup that includes SPF.

I implore you to share this post with at least one person who would benefit from including sunscreen in their skin care regimen.
