You light a candle. Pour a glass of wine. Sink into a bubble bath. The water spills over, but that’s fine. You tell yourself, I’m finally doing self-care.

But the moment you step out of that tub, reality slaps you in the face—emails are piling up, the laundry isn’t folding itself, and your to-do list is longer than your patience.

So you think, Maybe I just need another glass of wine…

Here’s the hard truth: Not everything that feels like self-care is actually helping you.

Sometimes, what we call “self-care” is really self-sabotage in disguise.

Are you truly taking care of yourself, or just numbing yourself from the life you’re too exhausted to deal with? Let’s break it down.

The Difference Between Self-Care & Self-Sabotage

Not all “self-care” is created equal. Some things restore you, while others just distract you from what you really need.

✅ True Self-Care Feels Good Long-Term.

❌ Self-Sabotage Feels Good in the Moment but Leaves You Stuck.

The key difference? Self-care helps you feel better tomorrow. Self-sabotage only helps you escape today.

How to Tell If You’re Truly Taking Care of Yourself

Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Does this make my life better in the long run?

➡ Example: Binge-watching Netflix feels relaxing in the moment, but does it actually make you feel good afterward?

✅ Self-care helps your future self.

❌ Self-sabotage keeps you stuck.

2. Am I doing this to restore myself or avoid something?

➡ Example: Are you taking a break because you need to recharge, or because you’re avoiding that hard conversation, project, or decision?

✅ True self-care is intentional.

❌ Self-sabotage is reactionary.

3. Does this make me feel empowered or guilty afterward?

➡ Example: After spending money on that “self-care” purchase, do you feel refreshed or regretful?

✅ True self-care makes you feel fulfilled.

❌ Self-sabotage leaves you feeling empty.

Now that you know the difference, how do you break the cycle and start taking care of yourself in a way that actually helps?

1. Replace “Quick Fixes” with Real Restoration

Instead of numbing yourself, focus on deep self-care that actually recharges you.

❌ Instead of: Mindlessly scrolling to escape reality

✅ Try: Going for a short walk outside & breathing deeply

❌ Instead of: Binge-eating comfort food when stressed

✅ Try: Journaling or venting to a trusted friend

❌ Instead of: Saying yes to everything & then resenting it

✅ Try: Setting a boundary & saying, “I can’t commit to that right now.”

2. Start Small: The 5-Minute Self-Care Rule

Real self-care doesn’t have to be a grand spa day.

💡 If you only had 5 minutes to take care of yourself, what would you do?

•    Breathe deeply.

•    Write 3 things you’re grateful for.

•    Stretch your body.

•    Drink a full glass of water.

•    Say one kind thing to yourself.

If you start with just 5 minutes a day, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel.

3. Give Yourself Permission to Prioritize YOU

The biggest reason moms fall into self-sabotage? Guilt.

We think:

❌ I can’t take a break—there’s too much to do.

❌ If I put myself first, I’m being selfish.

❌ I’ll focus on me later, when things slow down.

The truth is; Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

A burned-out, exhausted version of you can’t show up fully for your family, work, or dreams. You deserve to be taken care of too.

And the only person who can truly give you permission? You.
