Chia seeds have been around since the time of the Aztecs and have certainly grown significantly in popularity. The Aztecs and the Mayans knew what to put into their bodies because chia seeds were a big part of their diet.

Chia seeds are cousins to the mint plant, though if you met the two you wouldn’t spot the resemblance at all! “Chia” means strength and true to its meaning, provides countless benefits for optimal health.

Here are some reasons why you may want to include chia seeds in your diet:

1. Chia Seeds are filling and Aide Weight Loss

Chia seeds look like tiny balls that swell once it’s soaked in liquid. The consistency reminds me of tapioca seeds and bubble tea. It doesn’t get quite as swollen as that and it aides in filling you up with good fiber and protein! It will regulate your digestion and improve gut health.

2.  Great Source of Calcium If You’re Lactose Intolerant 

Not everyone can have dairy in their diet and chia seeds are an excellent source of calcium. If you’re lactose intolerant or choose not to have dairy, chia seeds might be a higher source of calcium than dairy.

Healthline says in an article chronicling chia seeds, “The calcium content is particularly impressive-18% of the RDI in a single ounce (28 grams)…higher than most dairy products.”

3. High In Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Most people consume flaxseed and salmon to get their omega 3s since it’s a vital component for brain health. But did you know that gram for gram chia seeds have more omega 3 fatty acids than fish? Please note that fish oil is largely supported for being superior to plant derived omega 3s since it has DHA which is essential for brain health.

4. Helps Bone Health

If you have bone issues or an onset of it, then your bones will be thanking you when you use chia seeds. Chia seeds have calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Just an ounce of the seeds will give you about 18% of your daily recommended calcium intake. It also contains a mineral called boron which is crucial for bone health. It’s used often to treat osteoarthritis.

5. Energy Rich

The Aztecs used chia seeds to produce energy in their bodies. Chia seeds have been known to be powerful for workout routines. What the chia seeds will do is enhance your workout and sustain your energy levels for longer periods of time.

Chia seeds have many additional benefits and require further in depth research. I take my chia seeds in water every day. I soak a tablespoon in about 50 ounces of water.

Chia seeds have been a great source for making me feel full, balancing my digestion and an aide in reducing my portion size while boosting my health.
